As the eldest son of Carlos Gracie, one of the founders of BJJ, Carlson carved his own path, distinguishing his style from that of his family, particularly his uncle Helio Gracie. Carlson emphasized a more aggressive and dynamic form of jiu-jitsu, blending striking and grappling techniques with a strong focus on practicality and effectiveness in real-world fighting and Vale Tudo matches. Carlson’s jiu-jitsu was renowned for its emphasis on pressure, control, and positional dominance, contrasting with the more defense-oriented style of his brothers. His approach became a cornerstone of modern BJJ, particularly in competitive settings. Many of his students went on to become world champions and established their own successful academies, further solidifying Carlson’s legacy as one of the most influential figures in the sport. Not only was Carlson a pioneer in the sport, but he was also a fierce competitor, reigning as world champion from the 1950s to the 1970s.
